WATSON: Good morning! Scanning the newspaper? What are the plans for today?

HOLMES: A cup of coffee? I`m looking through the newspaper.

WATSON: (наливает кофе) What are the main news?

HOLMES: All the headlines are about «Christmas and New Year». Everybody is preparing for these holidays. Well I think we shall have a wonderful evening.

WATSON: What do you mean?

HOLMES: We are invited to Merry Christmas Party. Today we are going to speak about Christmas and New Year, recite poems and sing songs about winter holidays. How do you like it?

WATSON: Great! I`m ready.

HOLMES: Come on, my old faithful friend! Let’s listen to the song at first!

Jingle Bells»

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow,
in a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
laughing all the way.
Bells on bob-tails ring,
making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride
and sing a sleighing song tonight

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
in a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
in a one-horse open sleigh.

A day or two ago,
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright,
was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank,
misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank
and we got upset.

WATSON: You know, Sherlock, there are many holidays in English-speaking countries. But the holidays we like most of all are New year’s Day and Christmas Day.

HOLMES: People prepare for these holidays beforehand: they send greeting cards, buy presents, make fancy dresses and decorate their houses. And when the holiday comes, they congratulate each other singing songs and reciting the poems.

WATSON: Now we can see what poems about Christmas and New Year you have learnt.

Winter, winter, everywhere
Shows its face, its eyes, its hair
Winter, winter, freezing cold
enjoyed by many, young and old.

Snowflakes are nice,
Snowflakes are white.
They fall by day,
They fall at night.

So softy came the snowflakes down
That no one heard in all the town.
And right-side up they landed too,
As parachuting elves would do.
So when the morning came – surprise!
The world lay white before your eyes.
With cotton roof and hills a-blur
And avenues of rabbit fur.

Christmas tree Poem

Christmas tree, sparkling bright,

Filled with baubles, warmth and light,

Precious symbol of our affection

For Christmas time and its perfection,

Show each night your radiant glory

For "oohs" and "aahs" obligatory.

Christmas tree, don't let us down;

Show something special at your crown,

An angel, star, or splendid piece

To make our holiday joy increase,

An icon, pure, ideal, complete,

For Christmas memories fond and sweet.

Glitter and glisten, gleam and glow,

Oh Christmas tree, we love you so!

Slide, slide, the ice is strong.
Quickly, quickly slide along!
Slide along and don’t be slow,
In the cold your face will glow!

See the pretty snowflakes
Falling from the sky;
On the wall and housetops
Soft and thick they lie.

Frosty is the morning;
But the sun is bright,
Flooding all the landscape
With its golden light.
Hark the sounds of laughter
And the voices shrill!
See the happy children
Coasting down the hill.

It’s snowing, It’s snowing
What a lot of snow!
Let us make some snowballs
We all like to throw.
It’s snowing, it’s snowing.
Let us sledge and ski!
When I’m dashing downhill
Clear the way for me!

This is the season
When mornings are dark,
And birds do not sing
In the forests and park.
This is the season
When children ski
And Father Frost brings
The New Year Tree!

New Year Day, happy day!
We are glad and very gay.
We all dance and sing and say:
“Welcome! Welcome! New Year Day!”

I heard the bells on Christmas Day

 Their old, familiar carols play,

 And wild and sweet

 The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

I am dreaming of white Christmas ,

With every Christmas card I write,

May your days be merry and bright,

And May all your Christmases be white.

Merry Christmas!

The Winter Heart

Wish but one wish when winter comes,

Dream but one dream of the past.

The light from a fire is in all our homes

But the flames from the hearth won't last.

For faint and few are the embers,

 Snuggle up and keep on your gloves;

What the Winter Heart always remembers

Is the warmth of a heart that loves.

New Year

New things to learn,
New friends to meet,
New songs to sing,
New books to read.
New things to see,
New things to hear,
New things to do
In this New Year!

WATSON: Dear friends, the next task for you is to make up the words.

HOLMES: Look at the slide and find all the presents, which Santa wants to give to you:

(составляют слова, обозначающие подарки)

WATSON: Every year in December, we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. That is why we call this time of year 'Christmas' - we celebrate the church service, for Christ. The word Christmas comes from the Old English name Christ's Mass - and is the celebration of the birth of Jesus.

HOLMES: Most people are on holiday in England and stay at home with their family on Christmas day. You know, Watson, they like playing different scenes on Christmas Day. Let’s have a look.

Snow-White and seven dwarfs»)

Story-teller: Once upon a time, in a faraway land there lived a pretty girl. Her name was Snow White. Her father, the king, married again, and his new wife hated the girl a lot. The stepmother thought that she was the most beautiful woman in the kingdom and always asked her magical mirror about it.

Snow White: Oh, I am so unhappy. My stepmother hates me. My father has forgotten mе. Perhaps someday a prince will come and take me away from the palace!

Stepmother: Oh, how happy I am! I have married the king and I am the queen now. How beautiful I am! Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of us all?

Mirror (голос за кадром): You are very beautiful, but Snow White is more beautiful.

Stepmother (зло): Dirty glass! I’ll break you into pieces! Oh, Snow White, how I hate you!

You won’t live in the palace any more! Go to the forest and let wild animals kill you!

Snow White ( грустно): What shall I do? I must go to the forest. Nobody can help me. How unhappy I am!

Story-teller: So, our Snow White left the palace and went to the forest. She was very, very unhappy. There was dark and cold in the forest. Snow White got frightened very much. Suddenly she saw a small house. Seven dwarfs lived there.

Snow White: Oh, how it is dark here and nobody around! What shall I do? Where shall I sleep when night comes? (видит домик)  Oh, what a nice little cottage! It looks like a toy.

Who lives there? (стучит в дверь) Is anybody here? May I come in? (заходит) Oh, dust everywhere! The plates are dirty. I must clean everything here. Im so tired! I’ll just lie down on this little bed

Hush! There’s somebody in here!

2 гном (испуганно): It’s a burglar!

But nothing is missing!

May be it’s a monster?

I’m afraid of it!

But we must know who is there!

Look! Look! It’s a girl! She is sleeping.

How beautiful she is!

Her face is white as snow.

3 гном: Wakе up, wake up, please!

Oh, my! You are dwarfs!

And who are you?

Snow White: I’m Snow White. May I stay here? I can keep the house for you. I can do many things. I can cook tasty food, bake bread and clean the house.

Tasty food!

You are a very good girl! You can stay with us!

Snow White: Thank you, dear friends! I suppose you are hungry. Would you like me to cook meat soup, fish and potatoes, tea and cookies for you?

Oh, meat soup, fish and potatoes, tea and cookies!

Snow White: Your dinner will be ready soon.

Thank you, Snow White! Now we must go to our mine.

Be careful! Don’t let anyone in.

Don’t open the door to anybody.

Snow White: I promise, my good friends. Good-bye and good luck!

Good-bye!

How happy I am! Snow White has died in the forest. (кокетливо, глядя в зеркало): How beautiful I am! Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of us all?

Mirror (голос за кадром): With the seven dwarfs still alive, the fairest in the land, Snow White.

Stepmother (зло бросая зеркало): Shut up, shut up, dirty glass! I know what to do. I’ll poison her myself. Where is my magical red apple? Oh, here it is! How juicy and delicious it looks. I’ll go to the forest. I must hurry now!

Snow White: Oh, how happy I am! My dear dwarfs will come soon.

Oh, who is there? Come in, come in, please!

Oh, who are you?

Stepmother: I’m an old woman. I want to drink. Give me some water, please!

Snow White: (наливает в чашку воды, подает мачехе): Here you are!

Stepmother: Thank you, good girl! You are so kind! Have the apple. It is so tasty. Try it!

Snow White: Thanks a lot!

Stepmother (откидывая капюшон с головы, радостно): Ha-ha-ha! She is dead!

Oh, our dear Snow White is dead!

She is too beautiful to be buried in the cold earth.

What shall we do?

Story-teller: Suddenly a prince was riding nearby. He heard the dwarfs crying and came to the cottage.

Prince: Hello, my good men! Why are you crying?

Our dear Snow White is dead (плачет).

You must kiss her to wake her up!

Prince: Oh, I’m ready to do it!

Wake up, wake up, please!

Snow White (просыпается, потягивается): Oh, where I am?

Prince: You are safe with me. I cannot live without you!

Snow White: Oh, my prince, I’m so happy!

Three cheers for Snow White and her Prince!

Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

Story-teller: Very soon Snow White and her Prince got married and lived happily for f long, long time.

WATSON: The custom of having a Christmas tree in the home came from Germany. These trees were set up on December 24th and candles were often added to represent Jesus Christ.

HOLMES: Remember to hang up a stocking where he can leave gifts for you. If you have a Christmas tree, he will probably leave presents underneath. After hearing their favorite Christmas story, children write a letter to Father Christmas with their wishes.

WATSON: Now we suggest you to write your own Christmas wishes on these cards. We hope Santa Claus comes to you on Christmas Eve.

HOLMES: Dear friends! We say good-bye to you!

WATSON: See you later!

We wish you a merry Christmas”
