Marie Tussaud was born 1 December, 1761 in Strasbourg, France. Her father, Joseph Grosholtz, was killed in the Seven Years War. Her mother, Anne-Marie Walder, took her to Bern where she worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Philippe Curtius. It was Curtius who taught Tussaud the art of wax modeling. She showed talent for the technique and began working for him as an artist. Marie Tussaud (1 December 1761 – 16 April 1850)

When Marie was 17, she was allowed to model the great figures of that time. Among them were Francois Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin that are still on display. In 1794, Dr Curtius died and Marie inherited his wax collection. In 1795 she married a French engineer, Francois Tussaud, but her marriage was not a success, and in 1802, Marie took her collection of wax models to England where she travelled all over the British Isles. In 1835, Madam Tussaud’s exhibition found a permanent home in Baker Street, not far from today’s exhibition. Marie Tussaud

The most exciting thing about this museum is that you can get very close to most of the figures. The wax figures are standing and sitting, and sometimes moving and taking thanks to the controlled computers. There are several zones at Madam Tussaud’s and each of them is very exciting. You can see even the figures from animated cartoons too. Madame Tussaud’s museum

Modelling methods at Madam Tussaud’s haven’t changed in 200 years. It is the same process, and the same wax is used. These days, the bodies are made of fiberglass while originally they were made of leather stuffed with straw. Every year about 20 new figures are made. As soon as a person is chosen, the first step is to collect information: photos, articles, portraits, biographies. Sittings usually take place at the studios. About 500 measurements are taken. It takes about 6 months to complete the figure. The Studio Secrets

The Studio Secrets Audioanimatronic figures are carefully planned and programmed by a team of engineers. Speech and sound are recorded onto CDs and synchronized with the movements. Sleeping Beauty, the oldest figure on display, was modelled in 1765 by Philippe Curtius. Sleeping Beauty is an early example of animatronics: her chest rises and falls to mimic breathing.
